About Facet Injections
Facet joint injections are an injectable pain-relieving medication that is used to help decrease discomfort in the facet joints, located between each set of vertebrae in your spine from the neck to the tailbone. This treatment is used to reduce the inflammation and swelling of tissue in and around your facet joint space. The goal of the treatment is to reduce the pain caused by inflammation or irritation of the facet joint and other spinal structures. Dr. Kendall Carll, a board-certified spine surgeon and founder of Spine Care of North Texas, is skilled in the treatment of back pain. He recommends facet injections to North Texas patients who have attempted conservative methods of treatment for back pain relief, but have not been successful. "I recently experienced a pinched nerve that severely affected my ability to use my right hand. I contacted Dr. Carll who immediately went to work on my behalf. Knowing that this was a time sensitive situation Dr. Carll went out of his way to ensure that I received the appropriate MRIs, CAT scans, and nerve studies to properly diagnose my situation. After reviewing all the test Dr. Carll exhibited true professionalism and integrity by referring me out to Dr. Patty Young (I am so thankful for your referral) who specialized in the surgery that I would need. Dr. Carll could’ve chosen to operate because I had several degenerative disc, however he chose ethics over profit. Dr. Carll is a true professional that will put your health over profit! When it comes to your health there’s nothing more important than having a doctor that you can trust to be professional and ethical. Thank you Dr. Carll for providing me with both!"- K.H. / Google / Aug 29, 2018

"My name is Mark Walter. Doctor Carll and his staff are simply the best when it comes to spine and back care, bar none ! Ive had a total of 6 spine surgeries to date. My first one was done by a different doctor and it failed. I found Dr Carll after exhaustive research and countless inital consultations with numerous other doctors and I'm so glad I found him. He has since then performed five additional spine surgeries on me. I was badly screwed up to say the least and he literally gave me my life back. I highly recommend him to everyone including my own family members, one of which he also done surgery on and like me she was totally thrilled with him and the results. His staff are hands down the best in the business and the only team that Ive NEVER had a single complaint or issue with !!! This man knows his stuff and sets the standard other doctors and surgeons only dream of achieving. No games and no lies. Just kindness, honesty, and most importantly, he treats people like his friends and neighbors and not an ATM machine like so many doctors do now days. Give his office a call. Its the best thing you will ever do for your spine & your own peace of mind."- F. / Google / Nov 07, 2019
"Dr Carll was a lifesaver for me! I fought the back pain from a pinched/herniated sciatic nerve for 7 months. I tried everything from PT, chiropractic, spinal decompression, antigravity table, ibuprofen and more ibuprofen and steroids. Eventually, the pain was so unbearable that I could not sit through a meal or even drive. I finally gave up avoiding surgery and went to Dr Carll. I had minimally invasive microdisctectomy and the results were excellent. A few months of rehab later and I’ve got my life back. I’m so glad I saw Dr. Carll! He was so caring and explained everything thoroughly, including what to expect after surgery. His staff was just as wonderful and caring. I’d go back to him in a heartbeat. I’m very grateful for his skilled hands. God bless them."- M.J. / Healthgrades / Oct 15, 2019

Thanks to him and his amazing abilities I can feel my right leg again and now live without pain. I will forever be grateful to this office and Dr. Carll for being there for me as a person and as a patient.-Nicole Baucum"- Anonymous / Healthgrades / May 17, 2019
Facet Injections Ideal Candidates
Any patient who is experiencing back pain that has attempted nonsurgical treatment methods to no avail is a candidate for facet injections. Facet joint pain can be the result of injury, spinal stenosis, sciatica, or osteoarthritis. Although pain typically appears in the lumbar region of the back, it can occur anywhere in the spine. When your facet joints are inflamed, depending on the location of the inflammation, pain can be experienced in the following regions:
- Shoulders or neck
- Legs or arms
Facet injections are not typically recommended until after anti-inflammatory medications and other conservative methods have failed to alleviate symptoms. If you are pregnant, have an infection, or suffers from a bleeding disorder, you are not a candidate for this treatment.
Facet Injections Procedure Technique
You will be referred to the office of a pain management specialist to receive your injection. To address pain in the facet joint, facet injections will be performed while the patient lies on their stomach. For cervical or neck area facet injections, patients may be asked to sit or lay in other positions. The procedure will be performed using x-ray guidance, also known as fluoroscopy. Facet injections may be given using local anesthetics or intravenous sedation, depending on the severity and location of the pain.
Before the injection(s) is given, the neck will be cleaned with antiseptic. Then one by one, the injections will be inserted into the affected joints. Most specialists treat 3 – 4 joints per visit.
What to Expect with Facet Injections
You may feel a sense of pain relief immediately after the injections. This is due to the local anesthetic injected during your procedure and will only last for a few hours. Your pain may return after the medication subsides and could remain for a couple of days. Patients whose procedures were performed under sedation will need a ride home. You will need to rest and relax for the remainder of the day, using ice to help ease the discomfort of the injection site. Barring complications, you should be able to return to regular activities the following day. Most patients report pain relief following facet injections at 5 – 8 days post procedure.
