About 360-Spinal Fusion
360-degree fusion procedures are very common surgical techniques that are used to fuse vertebrae in the spine. During these procedures, board-certified spine surgeon Dr. Kendall Carll creates incisions in the necessary portions of the spine to reduce abnormal motion in the regions that are producing pain. Also known as an anterior/posterior lumbar fusion, this procedure requires incisions to the low back region as well as the abdomen (anterior and posterior) to complete the fusion. Dr. Carll and the entire team at Spine Care of North Texas are committed to helping patients regain their quality of life and mobility by diagnosing and treating the underlying cause of chronic back pain. Using 360-spinal fusion, Dr. Carll can provide long-term results in a minimally invasive a manner as possible.
"I recently experienced a pinched nerve that severely affected my ability to use my right hand. I contacted Dr. Carll who immediately went to work on my behalf. Knowing that this was a time sensitive situation Dr. Carll went out of his way to ensure that I received the appropriate MRIs, CAT scans, and nerve studies to properly diagnose my situation. After reviewing all the test Dr. Carll exhibited true professionalism and integrity by referring me out to Dr. Patty Young (I am so thankful for your referral) who specialized in the surgery that I would need. Dr. Carll could’ve chosen to operate because I had several degenerative disc, however he chose ethics over profit. Dr. Carll is a true professional that will put your health over profit! When it comes to your health there’s nothing more important than having a doctor that you can trust to be professional and ethical. Thank you Dr. Carll for providing me with both!"- K.H. / Google / Aug 29, 2018

"Excellent Care!! - I had put off my 360 Spinal Fusion for over a decade, relying on epidurals to deal with the pain. After doing two years of thorough research, I chose Dr. Kendall Carll at the Spine Care of North Texas. Being that I’m in the medical industry, I did ask around, too. From the initial consultation, all staff involved were very supportive and explained all aspects of the procedure; including what I could expect during and after the procedure. Because I never really experienced “excruciating” pain, I stopped taking all pain meds three days after the procedure. I was up and walking the day of the procedure and followed all directives. I was up several times a day walking and learning how to use steps; since I my place is two levels. The staff did a great job setting up my home health care; which included a nurse and a physical therapist. They, too, did an outstanding job. A large part of my job involves air travel. I felt so “good” I reached out to see if I was ok to travel. I followed all restrictions, primarily lifting, and was able to take a two-hour flight. This is amazing considering it was only 23 days post-surgery.If you’re like me and will use insurance, be sure to do the match; to make sure your rehab will be completed by the end of the year.“I am 100% satisfied with my experience with Spine Care of North Texas. Every single person on staff was terrific, and the system worked flawlessly. I now refer all my friends and family to them."- Anonymous / Vitals / Feb 04, 2019

Patients suffering from low back pain and nerve pain in the buttocks or thighs could be candidates for spinal fusion surgery. More conservative treatment methods may be attempted before surgery is recommended. To find out if you are a candidate for 360-spinal fusion surgery, contact Dr. Carll’s office today. The following are back conditions may require a 360-spinal fusion:
- Post-discectomy syndrome
- Degenerative disc disease
- Fractures of the lumbar spine
- Tumors or infections of the cervical or lumbar spine
- Significant instability or spondylolisthesis in the cervical or lumbar spine
The 360-spinal fusion procedure is considered somewhat safe as surgeons typically use minimally invasive techniques to complete it. At times, two surgeons will complete the surgery together — one working from the posterior side and one from the anterior side. In slender patients, the spine may be easier to access through the abdomen versus the back due to muscle thickness. During the procedure. Dr. Carll will insert an interbody cage between your vertebra and fill the empty space with synthetic bone graft material. From the posterior side, your vertebra will be fused together with screws. This technique yields the highest success rate of all spinal fusion procedures. When the surgery is complete, you will be sutured closed and closely monitored until you wake up.
What to Expect
You can expect to remain in the hospital for up to three days following your surgery. Most patients are fitted for a brace or corset immediately after the procedure, which will restrict movement as well as promote healing of the fused vertebrae. Dr. Carll typically has patients begin physical therapy within a week of their first post-surgery follow up to encourage healing. Each person’s recovery will be entirely unique following spinal fusion surgery. Recovery times may be lengthened or shortened according to the extent of the surgery, the underlying cause of the condition, and the patient’s age and overall health.
